Hey, TQA Records is back after a lack of activities involving new artists in the past couple of years.

In order to make up for lost time, 2010 will see the release of a new concept of split series, called Aural Diptych Series (ADS). It follows the same concept as the split record with 2 bands/artists, however each one will have their material on a separate 3" EP CDR, and both will be packaged as one item --- much like a diptych in photography, which uses two different images side by side to form one single artistic statement. Meryem Yildiz, a Montreal-based photographer will be providing her trademark diptych photography as the artwork to be included in the packages. Elayne Safir, a NYC-based artist will be providing the cover artwork.

The first artists of the ADS series will be:

TQA013 | ADS01 : Mains de Givre / thisquietarmy
TQA014 | ADS02 : Quilt / Hoefizer

Plans for ADS03-ADS08 are already in motion; artists we're currently talking to are Elika, Millimetrik, Aidan Baker, Leah Buckareff, Sleeping Me, Scott Cortez, Melissa Arpin-Duimstra, Electroluminescent and more.

You can already pre-order ADS01 + ADS02 here: http://thisquietarmy.com/records/

thisquietarmy & Scott Cortez - Meridians 12" LP out now!

Image

The collaboration between Scott Cortez and thisquietarmy doesn’t really come as a surprise. The latter acknowledges that the previous works from Cortez (under the lovesliescrushing moniker) greatly influenced his work, to the point of using the same way of writing the band’s name (no capital letter and no spaces between words) for his actual solo project. The main thing that they have in common is their unconventional use of the guitar, which they consider as a signal generator. They then process those sounds through various effects, to obtain a different result than that of the original signal until the source becomes almost undetectable. Meridians is also the first vinyl production from thisquietarmy, as it is Scott Cortez’s first under his real name.

Meridians is a cross-project between the two artists. Separated by 1.000 miles, Eric Quach (thisquietarmy) and Scott Cortez simultaneously began to record the first guitar layer for both sides on December 18th 2009 at 1pm EST. The original drone was supposed to be played like a three tones piece, with the use of a different string for each tone. They then sent the result to each other to work on the piece that the other had begun. This is how they recorded the two tracks that feature on this record.

This is definitely an unusual practice, far from the classic split exercise and the result is fascinating: abstract, radiant and hypnotic drones that intertwine with numerous harmonic structures. They created a coherent whole that goes beyond their unique recording method.

Written and pressed to be played at 45 rpm, the record can also be played at 33 rpm. Darker and more mystical, the result is stunning.

Tracklist

A. 41° 52' 50" N, 87° 42' 39" W
B. 45° 30' 4" N, 73° 33' 29" W

Available on three:four Records. Order here: http://www.three-four.net/releases/TFR005

I back TQA records hard frankly some of the best lo-fi/ambient/whatever I have ever heard and decided that this is one of the labels I have to get to do more US distribution for.

If anyone is interested in these titles but are put off by the shipping from Canada I got some of these stateside I will be selling in my online distro but wouldn't mind helping out someone from the forum for a bit cheaper than I was planning on.

This is the TQA stuff I have:

Image

I also have some of their distro stuff from Chat Blanc including the "5 ans de musique et de révolution" book + CD pictured and its gorgeous. I am not planning on spamming everytime I have something to sell but thought I might help someone out with these titles because Canadian shipping is no joke. I hope thats copacetic :D

if anyone is interested PM me.

It includes two sets of diptych photography by Montreal-based artist Meryem Yildiz.
