The State of Origin series continues again this year, with the first of the 3 game series being played on Wednesday night, Australia time.

Apparently, international folks will be able to stream it LIVE here:

Click on the 'State of Origin 1' button in the 'Round' section to watch :D

wooh hooh!

Check out the premier rugby league competition in the world. The most scintillating plays, the hardest hits, the most skillful play you'll see in world rugby league.

As no-one here is in anyway interested in this (haha!), i'm going to elaborate a little bit on the history of State of Origin.

Back at the turn of the 20th century, Australian rugby league was born. Each state had their own leagues and soon after the birth of rugby league here, a state vs state concept began, where the best players playing in the New South Wales league competition would play a team comprised of the best players playing in the Queensland league comp. Soon though, the NSW rugby league became the dominant competition in the country. Players wanting to play for Australia really had to play in the NSW competition to be considered. Therefore, up until 1980, NSW was THE dominant team in the State vs State competition because all of the best players were playing in the NSW league.

In 1980, a masterstroke in the game happened when they changed the rules for the 3rd game of the 1980 series (already won by NSW) to the concept of State of Origin; you played for the State you were born in and/or played yr first proper games of rugby league in. All of the Queensland players that were playing in the NSW competition and played for NSW in those first 2 games of the series, now represented QLD in the 3rd game, and from then onwards. In that first game of the 'State of Origin; concept, back in the days of the 'biff', Arthur Beetson, the 38yr old inaugural captain of QLD smashed his teammate at Parramatta of many years, Mick Cronin, with a king hit, which started a brawl that basically continued for most of the game. So began the mate vs mate idea that has catapulted the State of Origin series into the most passionate series of rugby league in the world. Team mate against team mate, no holds barred.

Its worth a look, and if you dont know anything about rugby league, it is the best form of the game you'll see. Better than international test matches.

Right, the first game of the 2014 3-game State of Origin series was played last night. NSW won 12-8. The scoreline does not reflect how epic this match was. Went down to the wire, with QLD just failing to score in the dying minutes. It was a brutal encounter too. 6 players were injured during the match. The QLD halfback (akin to a quarterback) broke his arm after 10 minutes, another QLDer suffered an ankle injury and played the 2nd half hobbling, one NSW player dislocated his shoulder whilst landing for a try, only to RE-locate it back himself and to continue playing the game. Another NSW player suffered a torn muscle injury that could see him ruled out for the rest of the series (and maybe the whole NRL season).

You dont get much harder than this game at State of Origin time.
